Firefly viewing at Hakoshima
The spring water at Hakoshima falls as a waterfall. Downstream, the Narusawa River is well known as a habitat for fireflies. Hakoshima Hotaru no Sato is carefully looked after by local people and the firefly protection group.

When they fly — tips for watching
They begin to glow from about 8:00 p.m. The peak is about 8:15 to 8:45 p.m. Still nights with no moon are especially good. On rainy or chilly evenings there is said to be little activity.
